5 Tips For Tackling Small Roof Repair Jobs On Your Own

If you are missing a few shingles, or you need to apply sealant around a vent on your roof, you can often tackle these smaller roofing repair jobs on your own. Here are some tips you need to know before repairing your roof.

1. Wear Rubber-Soled Shoes

When working on your roof, you need to keep yourself safe. One of the best ways to do that is by wearing rubber-soled shoes when you are working on your roof. Rubber-soled shoes will help give you the traction and support you need to avoid slipping and falling. Traction is essential when working on your roof.

2. Always Let Someone Know That You Are on the Roof

Working on the roof is not easy and presents a safety risk, which is why if you are working on your roof, you should always let someone know that you are up there. That way, someone will check up on you and ensure that you are safe throughout the work process.

3. Use the Same Shingles

When you are repairing your roof, try to use the same shingles. When you are putting a roof on your home, try to get an extra box or two of shingles for repairs. Or, when you need to buy replacement shingles, get an entire box so you can keep using the same type of shingle. Even little differences in shingles can be really noticeable, so you will want to stick to the same color, style, and brand if possible when replacing damaged or missing shingles.

4. Be Careful with Nails

When you are working with nails on your roof, you will want to be careful with them. When choosing which nails to use, you will want to stick to using galvanized steel nails or aluminum nails; both of these types of nails will not rust easily. When you apply nails, make sure they are under the shingles. If the head is exposed on the nail, you will want to put roof sealant over the nails to ensure that they are sealed and don't present tiny little areas for water to get into your roof.

If you have a bigger roofing repair or that you don't feel comfortable tackling on your own, you will want to call in a roofing repair service, such as That Good Ole Handyman. They will be able to take on the bigger jobs that you can't handle, and they will be able to inspect your roof to let you know what else needs to be repaired.
